Best steps for washing Clip-In Hair Extensions | The Shell Hair

Once you have your own set of shell hair extensions, it is crucial to take proper care of them to keep them looking luscious, smooth, and shiny. They can last anywhere between three and six months, or even a year or longer if given the proper care they deserve.

Although shell hair extensions are made from 100% Remy human hair, they don’t require as much washing as your own hair does because they don’t receive the same natural oils from the scalp. Generally speaking, your extensions will last longer if you wash them less frequently. You can use your best judgement to determine how frequently to wash them, but we advise washing them only when there is a significant product buildup.

If your extensions are becoming increasingly difficult to style, this is most likely due to product build-up and the need for washing. We suggest washing them every 30 years or once a month. Watch the video below for complete washing instructions.

Step 1: Brush your hair extensions

The first, and possibly most important, step is to brush your extensions before getting them wet. This reduces the possibility of tangling during and after washing the hair. We recommend brushing your extensions from bottom to top to gently remove any tough knots without pulling the hair out. When working on your hair extensions, we recommend using a wide-tooth comb or a soft bristle brush.

In preparation for the wash, neatly stack your wefts on top of each other in a bundle, just like you did when you first got them. This will help to prevent tangles with the clips during the washing process.

Step 2: Shampoo

Before and after shampooing, we recommend using a moisturising sulfate-free and alcohol-free conditioner. Skip the shampoo and only use conditioner to co-wash your extensions!

Wash your extensions one weft at a time to avoid tangling and to ensure that each weft is thoroughly washed. If you’re pressed for time, you can tie the extensions together with an elastic and wash them all at once.

Step 3: Condition

After shampooing all of the extensions, it’s time to condition them. Apply a generous amount of conditioner to each strand from top to bottom, massaging the product into the hair thoroughly. Leave on for 20-30 minutes, then thoroughly rinse out each weft. Generally speaking, the longer you leave it on, the better.

Step 4: Air dry your hair extensions

First, gently squeeze any excess water from the extensions, and never rub your extensions dry with a towel, as this can cause extreme damage and breakage. When possible, we recommend air-drying your extensions. When air drying, use a microfiber towel to remove excess water faster and to avoid roughening the hair (which can also cause tangles).

Step 5: Comb

Combing wet hair is usually not recommended because this is when the hair is at its most fragile; however, you can make an exception to ensure that your extensions dry straight. Brush a wide tooth comb gently through each strand from bottom to top.

Come back after the extensions have dried and are clean, smooth, and ready to clip into your hair.

Commonly asked questions on Hair Extensions

Q: How often should I wash my clip-in hair extensions?

In general, the fewer times you wash your extensions, the longer they will last. You can wash them as often as you like, but we recommend only washing them when there is a lot of product build-up.

If your extensions are becoming increasingly difficult to style, this is most likely due to product build-up and the need for washing. We suggest washing them every 30 years or once a month.

Q: Do I need to wash my hair extensions after curling to make them straight again?

This is not necessary unless the hair extensions have a lot of product buildup (such as hairspray). Instead, use a soft bristle brush to gently brush out the curls from bottom to top and a hair straightener to straighten the extensions. Before straightening, use a heat protectant spray and a low to medium heat setting.

Keep in mind that using sticky products like hairspray, gel, or wax can and will clog up your extensions. The more products you use, the more frequently you will need to wash your extensions, which will result in dry, tangled extensions. Remember that any products you use on your natural hair can transfer to your extensions.
